Lest We Forget………

On the anniversary of the tragedy that occurred on 9/11, we’d like to share some particular sites of photographs of that days events.

Bill Biggarts Final Exposures from the site ” Digital Jounalist”
911 Research
9-11 images

And a very interesting comparison of photographs at locations then and now from National Geographic.

I didn’t realize how strong my reaction would be to seeing these images again. There was an uncontrollable sadness and shock just in preparing the links for this article. Perhaps since we were inundated with those scenes for so long after the event, we do a subconscious block. Maybe the media saturation serves a dual purpose: on the one hand you have been delivered the news in every conceivable manner, on the other your emotional capacity is tested to a point where your brain gets inured to the information.
Well, these images will be fresh again. Be forewarned as you click through the links.

The relatively recent event should be commemorated with a moment to remember the people that lost their lives and the enormous impact on all of our lives, globally.

In honor of that day, we are proud to offer our weekly giveaway this week of the Joel Meyerwitz book:Aftermath: World Trade Center Archive

“Dude, I’m totally going pro and I’m going to rock the ad world”

And of course this dude knows how to sell his work to the art buyers at all of the major ad agencies.

Reality check: Many of the major photography schools will help you learn the craft, expand your horizons, and build a book. To pass your course.

“But once you’re out in the big bad world, who’s going to show you the real ropes? How should your book flow to really make a sale? Should you have hooked up with that awesome web designer in the interactive department to make the right site to showcase your work? That shot of your girlfriend totally got you an “A” but is it right to start your book with that image?

Here’s Mark Focus, from the one of the funniest advertising movies, EVER, Putney Swope, presenting his work.

The best place to go for the straight info is the pro. Someone who has been on the right side of the sale: the buying side. Physician heal thyself, but photographer, maybe you should let someone help edit your portfolio.

Thankfully there are people around to do just that. Call em’ coaches, call em’ career counselors, but for your own sake CALL EM!.

I recently digitally met Christine Saunders, who is Continue Reading »

Weekly Giveaway – Where did it go?????

No worries. It’ll be back later this week. Just make sure you are signed up for the NEWSLETTERso you can be eligible.
We have been busy working in the background to bring you some new features which we’ll be announcing soon.

Speaking of announcing soon, Steve Jobs just announced the new iPods.[photopress:ipod_hero_touch_20070905.jpg,full,alignright]

There is a new video nano that will also be able to show photos. And videos. A photo album in your pocket. Just right for the holidays. What a great idea to give someone a personal photo album as a gift on a nano. Of course YOU can’t put it on, since the iPods only sync to the one computer.
Hmmmmm…
And there is a new iPod touch, pretty much the iPhone without a phone. Only holds 16 gigs at most.
They now are in partnership with Starbucks so the Wi-Fi on the iPod touch will be hot-spotted at Starbucks. Soon, anyway.

But there is an iPod Classic in a metal housing. Up to 160 gigs so you can use it to transfer huge files as well as hold you music and videos.

And these do effect your photographic life. New ways to share you photos on the iPods and, in the case of the iPod Touch, on the web.

Lots of new stuff for a Weds.

Big Date in the History of Photography- “You Press the Button,We Do The Rest”

Of course you all know what the date of September 4th, 1888 means to the world of photography ,right?

OK, I wasn’t sure either.

Well it is the day that George Eastman received the patent for the first roll film camera and registered the name KODAK.

[photopress:1890_Xmas_Kodak_Ad.jpg,full,centered]
Not quite sure about the grammar here, but it’s a good example of the Kodak emotional touch points to come.

And as far as “you press the button, we do the rest?”. Yeah, right. It’s a bit more of “you press the button then invest some real time” . Sure, you can go with your media card to the local Ritz or other kiosk wielding facility, and get your prints out. But with so many choices of how to share your snaps, the process has elongated.

All good though.

What do Ansel Adams, Alfred Steiglitz, and Diane Arbus all have in common?

They are part of an amazing group show currently on exhibit in MOMAs Edward Steichen Photography Galleries
There are a few other folks in the show:
Atget, Harry Callahan,Tina Modotti,Edward Weston,Bernice Abbott,Dorthea Lange, Rodchenko,Moholy-Nagy,Lee Friedlander, Gary Winogrand, William Eggleston,Paul Strand, Brassai, Eadweard J. Muybridge,August Sander, Harry Callahan, Thomas Struth and I’m sure I’ve missed a few.
