Nikon 18-200 lens: You’ll like it, You’ll REALLY like it!

[photopress:sodacux.jpg,full,centered] At the long end.

Wide as it’ll go.

On the recent trip overseas, I wanted to cut down on the gear as much as possible. yet still be shooting with a full featured DSLR/lens combo. And then I read about this lens,
[photopress:18_200.jpg,full,alignright] Nikon 18-200 3.5-5.6. Compact, Vibration Reduction, made for digital, everything I could ask for. So I decided to take the D200 and just the one lens. Gulp.
Well, no guts, no glory.
Here’s how it netted out: Continue Reading »

“Beam Me Up, Geeky!” – IPHONE Photo apps plus a ton more.

[photopress:iphone.jpg, full, centered] Oh, sure. Picked up one of the IPHONES. NO, didn’t stand in line. Ordered and delivered in a normal fashion.Look, it’s a phone: they want EVERYONE to have one. The hardware cost is nothing compared to the 2 year service commitment.

And of course in short order there are a number of applications available that make this unit a bit more of a draw.
We’ll give you a full last at the end of this. Continue Reading »

John Szarkowksi – 1925-2007 – In Memoriam

On July 7, 2007 one the most important voices in photography, died. John Szarkowski photographer, curator, writer, influencer passed away after a stroke.

As the photography curator of the Museum of Modern Art for 29 years, he brought the fine art of photography to the forefront of the general masses. After being hand picked to succeed Edward Steichen, ( of the Family of Man exhibit) as curator of the department, his influence in the photography world will be felt forever.

Two of his books on how to look and write about photographs, The Photographer’s Eye(recently republished) and Looking At Photographs currently out of print ) have been on my bookshelf since they were first required reading for my studies. And one was a gift from my first mentor, Steve Nichols. Always good to listen to your teachers.

In recent years, he began to show his own work which had been kept in the background so as not to appear self aggrandizing. His retrospective at MOMA, and SFMOMA, last year showed what had been hidden.

By turning you on to the man’s work and life, we hope that you can take a bit home to your heart and honor his memory.

In addition, we will send a copy of The Photographer’s Eye to the 1st person to email us with a shipping address, your name and “John” in the subject line. Send email to damonw@photoinduced.com.

It may make a difference in your photographic life. It truly did in mine.

With thanks and respect to Mr. Szarkowski.

This is how it shakes out:

[photopress:B5309.jpg,full,centered] Congratulations to:
Michale I. of Carrboro,NC who will receive the WEEGEE BOOK, and to Mary Jo B. of New Zealand where the Magaret Bourke-White book will go to live.
Yes, that was this weeks surprise in the NEWSLETTER.
Thanks again for all of the fast responses. We are hopefully getting better at picking the things you like.
Which is the whole idea, right?

But we know there is some concern on the timing of the giveaway email. Now that we have quite a global audience (i.e. many time zones) the ideas have been getting tossed around as to how to make it a bit more fair.Hmmmmmmm…
We’ll try something different next week where we hope everyone will have a good shot at the goodies. More on this later.

It’s Official – Yahoo! Photos closing down.

[photopress:ma_ph_1.gif,full,alignright] And its time to move your images.Or lose them.

From an email we just received:

“Dear Yahoo! Photos user,

For some time now, we’ve supported two great photo sharing services: Yahoo! Photos and Flickr. But even good things come to an end, and we’ve decided to close Yahoo! Photos Continue Reading »
