Your Photographs On TV : Redux – Apple TV Gets An Update

Ok, you know we have been digging the Apple TV since it came out as a somewhat fulfilled promise of future set-top boxes.

(Right. What did he just say?)
Basically , you have a box, that, with wi-fi, connects to the internet and your computer(s) to stream all of your music, connect to iTunes (now you can rent/download HD movies), watch YouTube on your flatscreen, and……see all of your photos on your TV.
Yep.[photopress:photos_hero20080929.jpg,full,centered]
And now you can build a slide show from the photos on your computer OR Flickr OR Mobileme, set a soundtrack and the next time folks gather at your place, set the tone with your version of an active art piece. Especially if you have a flat screen mounted on the wall.

Now this unit could do a bunch of this before. Except for the sound track. Critical piece.

Slap a frame on that bad boy and sign the corner.

Or Maybe you just want a background piece that randomly cycles through your collection.

As camera tout more and more HD quality images, take advantage and put them onto you big screen TV.
A slide show of your last vacation never looked so good. Maybe get a CD of music indigenous to the area you traveled to, and add it to the show. Doesn’t matter if went to India or Texas for the trip, you plus the flavor with some appropriate sounds.
So pick what works best for you.

There are 2 models available- 40GB for $230 and 160GB for $330. And if you want to get real trick: you can control the AppleTV with your iPhone. Free app.
And if you already have one, it’s a free software update to get all of the new stuff.
Thanks, Apple.
One thing to note though as you decide on the hard drive size: the photos are not streamed but have to sync, I.E. loaded onto the drive. Maybe the stream is too big?

We love watching YouTube vids on TV and use the randomizer for photos. Actually helps in the edit process for large personal projects. Sometimes when you live with images, you see the worth or the lack thereof, of a photograph.

Here is an amazing sharing tool that everyone can get something out of, in the house. Or Office.

Only thing we’d like to see is if it could read GPS info on a slide show and then link out to a google map or “more info” page.

Maybe next year.

Some Quick tips for LA and NYC: This Weekend Only!

Sorry, for the last minute heads up but……
[photopress:gilbert_and_george.jpg,full,centered]
Free days at Los Angeles Museums this weekend, 24 of them, and in NYC, Aperture presents Gilbert and George at the Brooklyn Museum. If we were on the East Coast, we’d be there. A Rare opportunity to hear these gentlemen speak.

And if you hear about any late breaking events or news, let us know.

Do you Laugh Or Cry?

I’m thinking laugh out loud.
From Director Robert Downey, Sr., a prince,(yes, Iron Mans dad) came this rugged B&W movie about advertising in the late 60’s. Putney Swope.
Look at Mad Men now, and this film told the story of the rebellion against that man in the grey flannel suit.
Essentially, the only African-American executive at an ad agency, gets voted in to replace the deceased chairman, and he changes it to the Truth And Soul agency and hilarity plus messages occur.
Adult or language and brief nudity, you have to see this. Especially with the success of Mad Men.

There is an advertising photographer who maybe didn’t personify all of the shooters in the business at the time, but a certain ilk.

Here’s Mark Focus, from the one of the funniest advertising movies, EVER, Putney Swope, presenting his work.

This has gotten some mixed response from photogs, as they get a bit outraged at the depiction. Lighten up everyone! And Netflix this movie. And remember what Putney Says!

Why So Serious? Here’s A Little Candy To Lighten It Up

It’s not all fine art and sympathy over here at Photoinduced.com .
Oh,no.
Sometimes we stumble across something that is a little goofy, pointless and a totally excellent way to spend a few moments.
Take a still photo, any still photo.Upload it to M&M Candylab site. Easily track the key parts like eyes, mouth, nose and ears. Process it, and a phrase or a song and Voila!
Your animated face has come to life with words, or songs like “Blinded Me With Science”, and can be ordered up on the classic candy with that same face.
OK, sounds silly. I can hear the phrases you may be adding to your uploaded face now.
C’mon! Be nice. There are children present!

[photopress:Preview_photoExample.jpg,full,alignright] OK, here is kinda how the candy may look. You do have choices on color of coating and you can zoom, crop, rotate and otherwise edit your photos. The architects at M&M will adjust to make sure you get the right treats.
At only about $15. USD for a 7 oz. bag , it’s an unusual, personal, gift, Sure to make our Holiday Gift list this year. Remember they do melt in your mouth, not in your hands.

By the way the face on the animated M&M above is the owner of Jones Soda , the company that puts photographs on soda bottle labels. yes, we had another one up earlier, but this voice talks less. It drove everyone a bit nutty.

And it’s a little eerie how the eyes seem to follow your mouse.
Wait, they do. Try it!

Discover Saul Leiter

“I spent a great deal of my life being ignored. I was always very happy that way. Being ignored is a great privilege. That is how I think I learnt to see what others do not see and to react to situations differently. I simply looked at the world, not really prepared for anything.” Saul Leiter.

The other day a package arrived from London. It was the Saul Leiter book “Reprint” by Steidl. After going through the Walker Evans book last week, the sense of the city was strong, gritty and in some ways, a sad reality.

[photopress:41OCY0EJ3SL._SS500_.jpg,full,centered]

Looking through this book tonight was a whole other reality.
By shooting the city with a painterly eye, and often using outdated film, Saul Leiter presents a view of the city from the subjects possible view.
The photographs felt oddly familiar to me as a photographer. There were subtle colors setting a scene with a mood that was honest. Not raw reality, but honest to a feeling, even weather wise
Rare is it that an image can translate the muggy feel, and the muted colors emphasizing the seasonal closeness of the city.

The book came out last spring and was an immediate sellout. And with most photo books, other than an Annie Leibowitz, the runs are fairly limited. Could be a little tough to find. Like we said, ours came from the UK, and was less expensive than anywhere in the states.

I do urge you to find the book, learn about the photographer and enjoy a new vision from years ago.

These photographs were “re-discovered” by Mr. Leiter when he pulled them out in the 90’s and began printing them.

Small note: he was included by curator Edward Steichen in 2 shows on color photography at MOMA in the 50’s but he declined to be a part of the Family of Man exhibit when invited.
Last year he was honored with a show at Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson. yes, he is still with us at 84 years old.

Some books explore, others confirm, but this one stopped me in my tracks.
