Just In Time For Super Bowl – Another Look into Sports Photog Harry How’s Camera Bag – Part 1

You may not see him on the field but he’ll be there.
Harry How from Getty Images is one of the premier sports photographers out there.
We were lucky enough to spend some time with him awhile back and see just what kind of gear he uses. And why.
There is a 3 part series we shot, that resides on the VIDEO SHORTS page, but we felt a little front and center was in order.
We’ll start with his gear breakdown, but stay with us for all 3.

There are some brand new videos on the way, so stay tuned.

Weekly Giveaway – Double Your Pleasure, Double Your Power

THIS JUST IN!
Delkin is offering you folks a special discount on this charger if you can’t wait to see if you get one in the weekly giveaway.
Enter “INDUCED” at checkout on their website to get a 15% discount on the charger (and all plates & accessories) through Feb 5th at midnight. And if you dig that, we may be able to work out more of these.

………and now back to our regularly scheduled program:

OK, let’s help you with some gear that you will use all the time.

For years, we’ve been looking for the sweetest battery charger for our cameras that would be small and give us a better idea on charging status that the status light on or off.
One we can easily use around the world, with maybe just a plug adapter, and no transformer. And charge more than one battery at a time.

[photopress:products_headers-dual-charger_1.jpg,full,centered]
Well, we started to use the Delkin Dual Universal Battery Charger on our past few trips and it was perfect.
The size was just right, as there was no wasted space on this unit. It is a 2 sided charger, with the ability to charge a different manufacturers battery on each side . Just by switching out single battery plates

[photopress:delkinbatt.jpg, full, centered] full shot of the unit and sample charging plates
we were able to charge our still (NIkon) AND video camera (Canon) batteries at the same time. That is the Dual part of the name.

[photopress:delkinbatt2.jpg,full,centered] top view with 2 different batteries ready to charge

This is a major advantage as you use one less outlet. Trust us, in a hotel we’ll take it.
And the unit came with a long enough cord allowing us to keep the unit plugged in and conveniently on the dresser.

So here is how it works: Choose a battery plate for each side, slip them onto the charging block, the status lights will show you how full the battery is from 25%,50%, and 100%.
Yeah, so what they all do that. BUT…this one allows you to charge 2 different batteries at the same time in a nice small package.
Each battery has its own circuit so the monitoring process makes this like having 2 chargers in one unit. Perfect for the trip.
We like to keep the whole setup in a nifty MUJI net bag, so we can see what’s in there and make sure the separate plates stay together. With power cord, plates, car charger and the unit itself, its best to get it it’s own bag.

There you go. Charge 1, 2 of the same or different batteries. At the same time.
( I wish I had a perfect ShamWow Guy line here. But I got nothing. Although you can click for a video laugh.)

That’s what we’re using and we’re going to give away a complete Delkin Power setup to one of you, complete with 2 sets of battery plates, AC cords, and a car charger. Plus it’s available with your specific countries plug size.

The details on the giveaway will be in this weeks NEWSLETTER, coming at subscribers on Weds. @ 9:00AM PST.
Click on this link to check the plates available and we’re sure you’ll find the one you need.

ArtLA Opened Last Night In Santa Monica And We Found The Best Deal In Art

Last night ArtLA held it’s opening gala.

[photopress:ArtLA_32.jpg,full,centered]the paparazzi making sure they got the A-List celebs coming in to look/buy.

When you go to these events, the real treat is being able to see an incredible amount of work, at one time.
Well, you probably shouldn’t do it all at one time, or you’ll miss something.
Guaranteed.
And to just reiterate more reasons for you to go to these fairs:
A: You dig art.
B: You want to sell your art

Now the second part is something to pay attention to, because for all of the fine art photographers out there, you should really know the marketplace. Of course the photo specific shows may give you a more bulls-eye approach.
When you are creating your art, the end goal shouldn’t be which gallery, which museum, what collectors, which publications, etc. will be best for your work.
As long as you are not concerned with sales.

[photopress:ArtLA_6.jpg,full,centered] Is This True??

Sorry, but we’ve had the personal lessons in this. And not many places teach you the art business.
So attend these shows, watch the auction catalogs, ask dealers for advice, support your local galleries, and learn.
The business of art is affected by this economy too, but in a different way.
We have seen the hedge fund folks, who were fond of buying and flipping, driving up the prices, abandon the playing field.
The true collectors seem to be back, and are getting some very good deals to herald their returns. The move seems to have a slight turn towards the conservative with those pieces having an auction history ( i.e. investment potential) moving at a more rapid pace.
True, this makes it tougher for the younger or newer artists entering the market, but as in all things, talent will always carry the day.
And perhaps it’s the fresh voice, at a more affordable price, that can also do well in this environment.

Alright, the best deal we found and one of our favorite new additions to the home? yep, you can get one of these also, as long as you are quick:

It’s a Cycle Alright, Thankfully, Not A Vicious One

It goes a little like this:
Concept the shot, shoot it, digitize, print, look around, see all of the other art out there, be impressed, be critical, rethink your process (or feel darn good about it) get inspired to create more, concept…and so on.
Now of course that is the basic version, your process may vary.

OK, I’m sure it does.

This brings us to a discussion on the 3 month run of incredible art fairs we’ve seen around the world. Sure, the main focus for us are the photographic exhibitions, but man nor woman live by bread alone.
Simply put, you should expose yourself to all of the mediums to get a true grasp on how we communicate through our creative endeavors.

Not news, but a little reminder.
I remind myself all of the time.

So Paris-Photo, the biggest (and in my humble opinion) best of the lot, PhotoLA 18 years and going strong, AIPAD, and Arles, have become kinda of the “must-gets” in the gallery world of photography. The ancillary events surrounding these events can’t be beat. Don’t forget that Palm Springs Photo Fest is coming on strong for different reasons.

Then you have to get to Art Basel, in Miami or Switzerland for a complete dose. The extra curricular events here are about 27 different OTHER art fairs (plus rocking parties). The advantage to this event is the complete takeover of a city, by the participants. If you dig art, don’t miss it.

Here in LA we are now hosting 2 art fairs at once: LA Art Show at the Convention Center, and ArtLA, at the Barker Hangar.
Weds night was the first night for the LA Art Show and from the gallery filled space, you can get an incredible range of work.
The way I hit these events is to do a walk around the grid, photograph some initial pieces, then go in for the deeper look.
The caliber of work at this show was, hmmm…mind blowing. Truly. There was a good mix of the pop/candy art,

Sprinkle in some sculptural wooden beauty, which while not intellectually taxing, was pretty to look at. (not a bad thing.)

But for me the biggest surprise was the fine, classical, painting on the walls, in a slightly sequestered section near the front left of the hall.
Not a fan of the period, however, when paintings have the masters touch, you can’t help but be affected.

Today , it’s time for the ArtLA fair, where they have recreated a famous artist hang from Chinatown in LA, the Mountain Bar.
There will be coverage.

And then on Sunday, we concept.
