I Feel the Need…the Need for Speed!

It’s all getting faster. So currently you have Compact Flash cards that are 133x speed. RE: very fast in writing and reading.
Now there is a new faster speed. 300x! But…but…DSLRs can’t really write (i.e. shoot and save to memory card) any faster. So what the heck do you need this for?
Well, until you buy your new camera at the end of the year when it will probably be a built in feature (“Now with UDMA!” Shoot Faster than Ever!) you can still take advantage of the speed.
Where and How you ask? Keep it on the download, my friend, the download.
For sports or wedding photographers, you want to be able to download your handful of Compact Flash cards as FAST as possible so you can empty them and get back to refilling them with fresh shots. Speed is the key here.
And even though I don’t shoot weddings or sports, I am not shy about putting the settings to continuous frames and getting a burst off. In other words I shoot a LOT of photographs. While emptying the 4 cards that I have, there was a point where my UDMA (fast reader) was stuck in a piece of lost luggage. So I was left with a standard reader.Old school.
Can I say hours? Way too long to download the big cards. This posed a great test situation:so didn’t re-format and delete the images on the new speedy card.
When the UDMA reader arrived, I transferred the same card to the computer using the new reader. [photopress:pro_udma_reader_lrg.jpg,full,alignright] *Lets talk 15 min. and done. RAW and JPG. About 200 images on the 4gb. 300x speed card and 400 on the 8gb.
So the hip combo is the 300x speed card and a UDMA reader. Sell the rest in our FORUM. Well, keep a back-up, anyway.
And a particular note here: The LEXAR brand cards never, ever failed me. Not once.
Another brand, used in the SD card variety, crapped out on the last night of the European jaunt. Yeah. Toast. Bad news. 3rd time it’s happened with that brand. That’s the reason you carry multiple cards.
Not for nothing, but LEXAR is my brand forever. It just works. And now it’s reaallly fast.
Just wait till the new cameras come out that will complete the cycle.
Oh, your current memory cards are all good. Don’t toss them. Use them. Love them. But something new is coming. It always will.
The more you know: UDMA does NOT meanUnited Dance Masters of America. It stands for Ultra Direct Memory Access. And we all know ULTRA is better than…well non-ultra.
*(your mileage may vary)
Peace out.
