A good way to prep your entries is to first look at previous winners.
You may get a better idea of what that competition leans to for the winners, or the photographers who get the grants.

*World Press Photo. One of the most respected photojournalistic competitions.
*Lucie Awards Relatively new, this one has come on strong and is considered to be the Academy Awards of the photographic world.
*The Observer Hodge Photographic Award – Established in memory of photojournalist David Hodge, who was fatally injured at the age of 29, whilst covering the Brixton riots, the award has since helped launch the careers of many aspiring young photographers.
*Venice International Photo Contest – info released April 10th.
*Hasselblad Award
