JOBY Wavo Plus – Starter Mic for Vloggers
In recent posts, we covered mobile content creation tools, and ventured into the audio portion as well, so was very curious to check out this lightweight feature laden mic.
JOBY sent over this mic, the Wavo Plus, for review and had no input into this post.
First of all, this mic comes with most of the cables you need to connect to your camera, computer, and Android phone. To connect to an iPhone, you will need a USB-C to Lightening adaptor or cable.
Let’s look at some of the highlights of this mic:
Built-in battery life is approximately 30hrs per charge.
DB level for recording has 3 click stops, -10,0,+15, to adjust recoding levels depending on subject.
A Safe Track switch which will record at 2 DB levels so you can be confident of no clipped or distorted audio. In edit you can chose the left or right track to put onto your video, which ever sounds best. If you don’t turn that feature on you will get both sides at one level. Notice on the camera screen below, the diff in the levels while using the safe track feature.
A low pass/high pass filter switch which will help filter out extraneous noise like traffic, fan noise. Remember I said help, not eliminate.
As a shotgun style mic, you should get crisp sound from your subject, when pointed in their direction.
A headphone input so you can monitor the recording live, so you know audio is being recorded,
and a volume control to adjust your listening level.
The mic has a built in Shockmount, which helps isolate the mic from bumps that could be recorded.
There is also a built in cold shoe mount, making it super easy to mount on your camera, an a 3/8-16, to ¼-20 tripod screw input to add to a tripod.
The performance:
While using on a mirrorless, Fuji X-H2 in my case, the sound was warm, and connection and adjustment of levels very easy.
As the camera has its own headphone output, the monitor feature on the mic, was not needed.
This mic is way better than the camera’s built in mic, so that’s an improvement.
It is still best when used with 3-5 ft range, so great for vlogging. When you go further way, I found the sound got a little thin.
When I used it on an iPhone 14 pro, connected with all of the proper cables, adaptors, and a SnapCam magsafe hot shoe to keep the footprint small, this was a big test of whether it would get a place in camera bag.
The honest truth I that the difference between the audio quality of the phone alone, and the phone with the mic, was minimal. Decided no need to attach that rig to get the sound I needed.
There you have it!
An option to consider for vlogging or an intimate interview, and a pass for me on the phone option.
