When someone is starting out on photography, it is wise for the camera manufacturer to give them all of the tools to succeed, and enjoy the ride.
Yes, it’s addictive, so the first experience should be very pleasurable.

The new Nikon D3400 boasts an ISO range topping out at 25,600, over 24MP sensor, and a solid 5FPS burst mode, these are all things that help the new DSLR shooter get the shot they were hoping would be ton better than their phones.

And of course, being able to transfer images to their smartphone via low energy bluetooth, instead of wi-fi, is a great use of new technology. You can have the camera set to automatically send the images to your phone, while you are just hanging out. Until I get one in my hands, no idea of the transfer speed. Or if it includes RAW in the transfer. At 24MP, can’t be super fast on the drip, though. Great file size, though.

So, ability to shoot in low light, large files (additionally for cropping possibility) and a good burst mode to help get those sports moments a better chance to be captured. You also have full HD 1080p video, and the new lenses zoom much quieter than in the past. I mention that because when you shoot video from any camera, the on-board mics pick up every movement and sound you make around the camera. Even the lens zooming, so an external mic is the recco. It is a DX camera, so when you need to move up to a full frame, the ergonomics and controls will be familiar.
They even introduced a new 70-300 compact lens!

OK, all good things at a sweet price point.
Nikon is my DSLR brand of choice, and here’s a great way to get into the system.

Yes, there is a but……

Why on earth would they offer a non-VR lens, telephoto lens in a kit?
Seriously, I use an 80-200 Nikon lens, and I love having VR!
For someone new to the deal, I’ll bet they will be zooming that pup out to the max. Without VR, their results may very well disappoint. Will someone tell them to up the shutter speed? They may just have all on auto and spray and pray.
VR only cost another $50!! (that version is what is pictured above)

C’mon Nikon: I love ya, but someone in sales needed some price point to hit.
I’m sure this camera will be a good seller, as it should be, but I would never recco getting that telephoto without VR.

Spend the extra dough and get the VR versions of the lenses. You’ll be a much happier photographer!
