Day One at PhotoPlus Expo : Getting Hands On

The crowds came out despite the rain today at the Javits Center in NYC.
It seemed like there were more booths/exhibitors, and honestly, a lot more quality of gear being shown.
Maybe because everyone can get a head start on the goods online, both to see AND to react.
Today they came to touch.
And there was no shortage of sweet photo gear for that.
Here are some of the stills from the day, and video is coming. We shot a ton and more tomorrow.

You can almost see the smile behind the camera, as one visitor got his hands on a new Fuji X10. Of course he never let go of his bag used to take home brochures.( and swag)

more pix after the jump.

Delkin launched a huge move into the GoPro territory, with the Wing Man HD. Many of the same specs, with a 1/4″-20 tripod mount built in and a monitor built into the back. Tiny, Micro SD and less expensive. Bold step by Delkin as GoPro is blasting the market. Video to come.

Nikon brought the new P7100 with articulated screen, as well as the top model from the Nikon 1 series.

Canon showed off the 1Dx, which come to market in March. Tomorrow we get a video walk through, and more photos.

More Photos After The Jump

Most of the manufacturers were having presenters talking about, not only product features, but excellent shooting tips.

ThinkTank Photo had a well deserved full house most of the day. I had folks stopping me to ask me about my ThinkTank gear I was carrying. When it’s good, you let people know.

And then we saw what may have been the creepiest product for us. Perhaps it was the execution, and using different images would be better.

There was this coolness, but at the price, even discounted, you better know your RC helicopter skill sets:

At night, Tim Mantoani had a book signing of his long awaited volume of portraits of photographers and their iconic images.
It was a special event as many of the photographers included came by to sign books, and share praise and admiration for each other. Touching moments as one photographer would profess their long standing admiration and awe of another.

One of our favorite photographers, and just plain good people ,Douglas Kirkland was on hand.
The shock of white hair and the ever present up-beat mood, always brings god vibes to any event.

OK, maybe that’s a more serious portrait of him, but he does have gravitas in this photographic world of ours.

More tomorrow!
