Nikon D3300 and 35mm 1.8 lens Start Off The New Year

D3300_BK_18_55_VR2_frt34lOn the heels of the D3200, Nikon has made some upgrades on this popular entry level DSLR that add to a great value package.

On a topline, you get ISO range of up to 25,600, a sweet compact size, and the new EXSPEED 4 processor.

Oh, right 24.2 megapixels to make full use of the new processor.

Here is some of the new tricks this pup has:

Nikon has always been know for great glass (lenses). In this unit’s kit package you get an 18-55 VR II lens that is incredibly compact.

This learning comes from the Nikon 1 Series, which is their mirrorless camera series that’s kicking it overseas. Not so much here, so they used the lens design technology for a camera format that is strong stateside.

You also get a 5 frame per second shutter, which you’ll need for all of the games your kids play, and anything where action is the key element.

One of the new things actually takes good advantage of a Nikon accessory I’m not fond of: the wifi dongle WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter.

Why we still need to have a separate piece to get wi-fi on a camera today is beyond me. Maybe there is a cost savings, but it’s why smartphones are kicking the compact cameras to the curb. Wi-fi lets people share instantly.

OK, enough of that: with this dongle you can transmit your fine, super fine images to your smartphone AND use you smartphone as a remote control. Once can do a remote shutter, other functions aren’t far behind. Right?

It’ll sell for $649. list.

Plus , continuing on the fast lens parade started earlier this year, a new 35mm 1.8 FX lens.

While testing many of the mirrorless cameras, one of the true joys has been keeping a shortie lens on the camera for a fixed lens viewpoint. So when you want to really do some solid street shooting, nothing works better than going wide with a fixed focal length fast lens.

With this addition to the Nikon line-up, treat yourself to a solid piece of glass with the speed you need. MSRP.$599.
